Doubts Discussion: Custom Duties charged for International Shopping

Posted on Feb 7 2014 - 10:00am by poonam

From Anita,

I have one query about custom duties by Indian Govt. I wanted to buy few cosmetics online from Cherry culture(or any foreign online website) and have no idea about Custom duties need to pay . Can you let me know about it.

Doubts Discussion - International Shopping

Me: I haven’t tried international shopping yet as I heard mixed reviews about shopping from International websites. Few of the shoppers have lost their stuff in transit.. that’s why I am just scared to try and than random custom charges imposed by Indian Government. Some shopping websites like Strawberry.net and Feelunique.com do refund of the custom duty paid but not sure about CherryCulture.com. I am sure there are many who regularly do international shopping and might be able to help you with this.. πŸ™‚

I buy cosmetics and clothes regularly from international shopping sites. I had to pay custom duty twice, once from a package coming from South Africa and once on a bulk order from China. I think they aren’t supposed to charge anything if it’s a personal (not commercial) package and the price is less than Rs.10,000. Both the times that I paid, the price was less than this amount. But the moody customs officials declared that the value of the package was higher :/
So out of around 50 times, I’ve had to pay customs duty just two times: Rs 900 for the South Africa package and Rs. 2ooo for the China one. So it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be charged, I guess it depends on your luck.

    I apologise for the extra-long comment πŸ˜›

Most of the people I’ve talked to had to pay custom duty for their Cherry Culture orders. The worst part is that they do not refund incase your package gets lost(happened with a friend) Its always best to buy from international sites that offer a refund in case of lost package. If you want to buy NYX from Cherryculture then I suggest B2N. I’ve bought thrice from them and never faced any issue though it took almost a month to reach me! People in Mumbai usually have to pay for custom duty on pretty much everything they order. So if you live in Mumbai then its best to get it delivered elsewhere like Delhi. I haven’t paid a single penny for my orders yet *touch wood*

Ahh.. thats a bummer Lisha.. I have myself been tempted to shop.. as they go on with appealing offers but this internation shipping is scrayyy!!
I like when sites refund for customs.. its like they are truly addressing the customes concerns and want to make their experience happy!!
havnt tried B2n.. but will give it a shot sometime soon… πŸ™‚
Delhi seems to be a great option for international shipping.. now I wanna tryy!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

I have ordered from CherryCulture and iHerb. I ordered twice for Cherryculture and did not have to pay anything (I just got lucky I guess) but when I ordered from iHerb I had to pay Rs 1400 towards customs for an order worth 2500. So like Lisha suggested it is best to get it delivered to places where there is lesser possibility of getting charged with customs and then get it shipped to your place πŸ™‚
